"Marco Polo brought out a CD of Leopold Godowsky's Piano Sonata - a wonderful, sprawling, heart-warming, epic late-Romantic canvas, 50 minutes in length - by Konstantin Scherbakov, a phenomenal pianist... Scherbakov's playing is big-toned, generous, powerfully assured." Martin Anderson, Punch

"The sonata has had to wait until now, 90 years after its publication, for a recorded performance that does it justice ... The more I listen to the first movement in Scherbakov's revelatory account, the more my respect and affection for the work grows, with its heartfelt emotion and string of memorable ideas... The finale's Larghetto lamentoso is a passage of great beauty played caressingly by Scherbakov ... The four early miniatures which complete the disc are charming salon works..." Jeremy Nicholas, International Record Review

"Konstantin Scherbakov manages to throw his considerable dexterity and feeling for Godowsky's keyboard idiom into this music at full force. Note his caressing rubatos in the Andante Cantabile, the excitement and sense of ongoing momentum he brings to the first movement's boring development section, and his ultra-discreet pedaling. If you're curious to hear this work, Scherbakov's effort easily surpasses Geoffrey Madge's world premiere recording on Dante. While the four shorter works don't rise to the level of invention of other Godowsky short pieces (like those in the Java Suite), their period charm benefits from Scherbakov's thoughtful and scrupulously prepared interpretations. Those who've been following the Scherbakov/Marco Polo Godowsky cycle will want to add this fifth volume to their collections." Jed Distler, Classics Today

Stereoplay
